Who We Are
We are three friends, Andrew, Martina and Julian, who together founded and lovingly nurtured Maison Les Buis. We love people, we love creativity, and we believe deeply in bringing art closer to everyday life.
At the heart of Maison Les Buis is a simple conviction: art and culture should be accessible to everyone, not reserved as a privilege. We believe that everyone is an artist. Prior experience or accomplishments matter far less than a genuine desire to create. For us, creating is a way of transforming oneself, a path toward deeper self-knowledge, and a meaningful contribution to the world we share.
Our intention is to grow a creative hub in this sheltered hamlet, a place that already carries a quiet, inspiring energy of its own. Here, creativity unfolds naturally. We offer space for artists of all backgrounds to come and work, and we warmly welcome the local community to meet, connect, and take part in the act of making.
We care deeply about cultivating an open, relaxed atmosphere, one where people can feel comfortable, safe, nourished, gently challenged, and at home. Whether you are an established artist, at the beginning of your journey, or simply curious, you are welcome here.
We are mindful of material constraints and do our best to keep residency costs low, so that this space remains open to a wide and diverse range of people. Our hope is that Maison Les Buis feels not only like a place to create, but a place to belong.

Martina Kalvin
FOUNDER
I began my working life as a property surveyor, an experience that gave me a strong foundation in structure, place, and the value of well-made spaces. Over time, however, my interests naturally shifted toward building renovation, working with my hands, and exploring creativity as an integrated way of living and personal well-being. I find great satisfaction in the physicality of making, in restoring and reimagining spaces, and in weaving creativity into everyday life rather than keeping it separate from it.
Supporting and empowering others in their projects is something I deeply enjoy. I am known for being thorough, dedicated, and dependable, and I take pride in offering steady support, care, and attention to detail. For me, collaboration is not just about outcomes, but about the quality of presence and commitment we bring to one another along the way.
Maison Les Buis is, above all, about connection, about honest conversations, meaningful encounters, and the quiet magic of meetings that feel destined to happen. I am fascinated by the serendipity of life and by the subtle ways our work and our inner lives are altered through these shared moments. When we truly connect with another, something within us is gently stirred; old layers are shifted, and from this movement imagination can emerge – ideas and insights that may have been dormant or inaccessible before.
In a time when technology so easily claims our attention and fragments our focus, Maison Les Buis feels like a haven. It offers space to slow down, to meet oneself and others more fully, and to listen more deeply. From this place of presence and authenticity, something new can arise – work that is honest, grounded, and uniquely one’s own.

Julian Bennett
FOUNDER
I have a lifelong appreciation for art and design, and at this stage of my life my focus has naturally turned toward mentoring and supporting young people as they work toward their aspirations. I find deep fulfilment in encouraging creativity, confidence, and a sense of possibility in others, and in helping people feel seen and supported on their journeys.
My own creative practice is hands-on and grounded. I enjoy woodcraft, construction, and gardening, activities that allow ideas to take physical form while staying closely connected to nature. I am often described as a calm and balanced presence, someone who values peacemaking, positivity, and fairness, and who believes that creativity flourishes best in an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect.
Maison Les Buis is a place that reflects these values perfectly. It offers a tranquil and welcoming setting where I love to meet and spend time with like-minded creative souls. Sharing stories and experiences from around the world and witnessing artists’ projects evolve during their residency and continue to grow long after they leave is a continual source of inspiration for me.
Many residents have generously chosen to leave behind a piece of their work when they depart. These gifts are deeply cherished, tangible reminders of their talent, their presence, and the meaningful time we shared together. Each day here brings something new, unexpected, and joyful, and I remain truly grateful for the creative energy, connections, and friendships that Maison Les Buis makes possible.

Andrew Spira
FOUNDER
I am an art historian with a deep interest in the relationship between art, identity, and psychology. I spent several years working as a curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London before moving into full-time teaching. Along the way, I’ve written several books, focusing on art and the self, as well as Russian art.
At the heart of my work is a belief in social inclusivity, participation, and the richness that comes from diverse connections. I value spaces where people feel free to experiment, to question, and to explore ideas together in an open and supportive environment.
“Maison Les Buis, has changed me in many ways, I have learned to eat better, to live better and to paint better. ”
